Webinar on “Mountain Agenda and Rio+20”

On 14th May 2012, Around 25 youth from around the world joined the webinar on “Mountain Agenda and Rio+20” which was coordinated by Ms. Kabita Gautam (Advocacy Coordinator, Asia Pacific Youth Task Force on Rio+20). The webinar was jointly organized by Asia Pacific Youth Task Force on Rio+20, UNCSD Major Group on Children and Youth and The Earth Charter Initiative on the online platform. The webinar was facilitated by Ms. Nora Mahmoud (The Earth Charter Initiative). The webinar was held in order to broaden and exchange the knowledge and views on Mountain Issues, add values for the Himalayas and strengthen the voice of mountain youth in Rio+20, connect and develop understanding between the youth from Himalayas, Coast and in between as well as updates on efforts of youth for Mountains.

Around 1.3 billion people depend on the water that flows from the Himalayan Glaciers. The rising temperature in the Himalayas would be a catastrophe which is not just the future of few mountain communities at stake, but also the lives of nearly 1 in 4 people in the world, all of whom rely on the Himalayas for water as well as it will also affect the people and ecosystems from the mountains to the coast and then to the sea. The critical conditions that the Himalayas are facing is the population in these regions is composed of only old aged people and children but youth are rarely found due to high migration for one or the other reasons. So it is very essential to focus why the “Water Tower-MOUNTAINS” matters for the future we want and how Sustainable Mountain Development will help to stabilize youth in these regions along with Green Economy as the new opportunity for the youth from mountains.

1. Mr. David Molden (DG, ICIMOD) : Overview on Science and Policy of HKH Region
