After 20 years of Rio – Where do we stand? What are the new issues and challenges?

Though being a student of environment science it took me 3days to know the terms “Rio +20”, “Agenda 21”, “MDGs” and so on. Still I didn’t get it all in my brain. Now I would like to focus towards a community… How many people are aware about what is going on this earth? Perhaps, few may still don’t know what a planet “EARTH” exactly is? Now I would like to inject the academic faculties… How many people are studying and researching about these issues and sustainability and how many people imply it practically? How soon? Now I would like to pinch the government and others concerned bodies… Every time there are lots of meetings and conference calls which derive some conclusions, regarding those conclusions how many governments and concerned bodies have successfully achieved the objectives of those meetings and conference calls??

A lot of time, people talk about “Government didn’t do this, the corporations didn’t do that”. People attain great conferences, programs, events, etc they do take many lectures and yet they are the one to eat a chocolate and throw the wrapper in the environment, they talk about saving trees and yet make a land barren for housing, they write industrialization and urbanization are critical for the pollution yet they demand living in urban areas and depend on industrial products, they argue for water and let the rain wasted..

Coming to the main point, here I identify the focal point for sustainable development is nothing else than a human himself, the biggest change for climate change would be the concentration towards it of billions minds without leaving a single person and including every single child. The Agendas and Principles are not just to be written on the papers but are to be brought among the local communities during which the concerned bodies and representatives will explain what the governments and corporations are offering them and what is the role of locals to implement it. The studied and researched materials from academic faculties -schools to universities are not to be made a memory, they are to be discussed with the locals which will increase an eagerness within the locals to know and inquire more, it will also help to educate the illiterate one practically. The vital role of individual, say the youth, is not to feel awkward and hesitate doing the little things for example: on the way picking up the plastics and collecting them at relative place, this will arise questions “why the youths are doing so?” which will help to aware them about the consequences of plastics in the environment. The main part is that for the sustainability there must be eagerness to know things, the “W/H questions” must increase from every local individual, including every child. And the government should not just govern but monitor well.

Years before, many countries were facing the consequences due to human activities and over exploitations of available resources on earth. The natural calamities have never failed their violence over different states. Hunger, thirst and diseases have never left any living creatures. Then, in 1992 the Rio Summit was introduced for promoting sustainable development and penetrating effectively environmental concepts in social economic and political systems in many ways, perhaps which might not have met its overall objectives but has achieved few of them within 20 years. It seemed that all the principles of the summit met the objectives for human developments but it has great negotiation to the environmental development.

Say, “for the construction of a road the forest is destroyed which means loss of biodiversity, addition of smokes, loss of resources, addition of housing in the surrounding, decrease in fodders and firewood, increase in population, loss of fertile land, addition of human activities, less absorbance of CO2 gas, high consumption of the nearby resources, high GHG emission, less environment management, variation in temperature stability, increase in demands and needs, change in climate and impacts on human as natural disasters, disease and global warming..”

After 20 years, there would be probably no changes but human may learn to sustain their life fighting with the consequences of their negligence to the environment sustainability. For they have grown afar with technologies they may manage it somehow. But, if things are brought in actions then obviously, it will sooner or later attempt its MDGs with certain changes like: A tree per person, No food crisis, No poverty, No water crisis, Eco friendly houses and steong disaster combat, Regenerations of ice caps and snow sleet at black mountains, Increase on biodiversity, and Eco-balance.
